What Makes a Great Recording (or Corey Slutsky is Not Your Mom)
Feb 6 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 amYour mom says your album’s the greatest thing she’s ever heard. Shocker. Time for a dose of reality! Bring your recordings to class and get critiqued by the experts. Corey Slutsky isn’t your mom, but he is the Voices Only Founder and Executive Producer for the last decade, and a former RARB reviewer and CARA judge. He’s heard a lot of a cappella. He’ll listen intently to your recorded songs and point out right from wrong. It’s a no-holds-barred critique.
Corey will also play some shining stars and dismal flops from his personal collection for your listening enjoyment.
Learn what to listen for, and how to make your recordings shine. Will there be debates? Sure! Natural vs processed! What counts as cheating? What’s eye-rollingly unoriginal? Is the target audience the ACA-community or the general public? As a bonus, Corey reveals the tricks to getting selected for Voices Only Compilations.
Corey Slutsky is the founder and owner of Voices Only and Voices Only Productions; produced 16 (and counting) a cappella compilation albums over 11 years; CARA award-winning producer and recording engineer; RARB reviewer, Judge for CARAs, ICCA, Absolut A Cappella; Taught workshops and masterclasses at SoJam, Los Angeles A Cappella Festival, Kettering National A Cappella Festival, and Las Vegas A Cappella Summit; Performed all male voice parts and vocal percussion for USC SoCal VoCals, The Michigan G-Men, Michigan Kol HaKavod, and STREETNiX; Produced master’s thesis on “the growth and explosion of a cappella music from 1990-2005.”

The Business of Show Business w/ Kris Vicencio
Feb 6 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Sometimes we’re better at the “show” than the “business” but that’s OK! Kris Vicencio is here to set us straight! Lesson 1. self-marketing and promotion for the budding a cappella group. If no one knows about your incredible talents, they can’t throw bundles of money at you. Lesson 2. a brief “behind-the-scenes” look at what it takes administratively to take your group to its full potential.
Kris lives just outside of Washington, DC, but he is a native Long Island-er, a Mets fan for life, and his favorite bagel place is “Better on a Bagel” on Miller Place. He studied musical theater and was a founding member of the men’s a cappella group at SUNY Oswego. He received his bachelor’s degree in Public Relations from the University of Maryland, and has coordinated events for over a decade including collegiate and professional a cappella concerts, music festivals, weddings, military ceremonies, and non-profit fundraisers. He is currently the Volunteer Coordinator for SingStrong DC, a position he has held for several years.
