HOW TO DEVELOP A STUDENT-RUN GROUP W ADAM PALTROWITZ
Picture
A HS director only has so many hours in the day to teach and direct their groups. But what if your groups could direct themselves?

Adam Paltrowitz, public school music director, has a HS program with eight student-led a cappella groups and one teacher-led group. That's probably a world record. We don't know.  What we do know is that each and every year these groups are filled with students who take ownership of their path to excellence.

This class will talk about the challenges building a self-directed program and the incredible benefits for student and teacher alike that make it all worthwhile.

Discover how to create a high school a cappella group that thrives independently. Equip your students with the skills to rehearse effectively, arrange music, choreograph performances, select soloists, and handle every aspect of the ensemble—all without constant direction from you. Transform your teacher-led into a self-directed, collaborative group while fostering leadership, accountability, and creativity among your singers.

iNTRO TO OVERTONE SINGING WITH HARMONIC INTRODUCTIONS
Picture
Overtone Singing is a technique that enables one vocalist to produce and, with a bit of practice, control two notes simultaneously.

Overtone singing can be used in various contexts, from emulating synthesized sounds to full self-polyphony.

When multiple voices come together to sing in this style, a relaxing, glowing atmosphere is created. Overtones are always perfectly in tune.

This workshop will explain the theory behind overtone singing and teach the basic techniques of producing them.

Harmonic Introductions is a community vocal ensemble dedicated to expanding the awareness, appreciation, and understanding of polyphonic overtone singing. Founded by Robb Saffell and Julian-Israel Canizares in Spring, 2012, Harmonic Introductions has hosted and participated in over 100 events for over a decade to teach, perform, and build a culture and community focused on the art of overtone singing.

RIFF OFF! With Marc Silverberg!
Picture
Pitch Perfectly be most famous for the "Riff-Off" scene in which groups compete with one another in spontaneously improvising fully arranged on-the-fly performances. Some say songs can't be spontaneously composed in groups.

Dr. Marc Silverberg says
WRONG. WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG. YOU SIR ARE WRONG! MADAM, YOU ARE VERY WRONG! YOU ARE THE MAYOR OF WRONG CITY. IF BEING WRONG WAS A SPORT, YOU WOULD WIN THE WORLD SERIES.

Marc has pushed groups to improvise since 2005, before his music degree made him a doctor, back when Bobby McFerrin taught him the art of circle songs. That led to improvisation. Improvisation to chord recognition. Chord recognition to riff-offs!

Join the fun as attendees learn how to improvise pop songs by ear and take part in a “Pitch Perfect”-style Riff-Off competition. Will you be on the winning side?

Marc Silverberg is SingStrong's Single Singers director! He has been an adjunct professor at Five Towns College and the Director of Education for CASA. He is the author of “Quest for the A cappella Major,” a blog that discusses the continuing education of contemporary a cappella music and group improvisation. He has presented workshops on vocal improvisation at several CASA sponsored festivals, SUNY Purchase, The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York, The New York State School Music Association, as well as the American Choral Directors Association’s 2013 national convention. His Contemporary A cappella League Group, Satellite Lane, was crowned the 2013 and 2014 New York Harmony Sweepstakes “Audience Favorite,” as well as the recipient of “Best Arrangement.” In addition to being an a cappella clinician, conductor, and performer, he also writes original musicals and plays. His original work, He’s Not Himself, premiered Off-Broadway in 2012 as part of the New York Music Theatre Festival. He is a graduate of the University of Delaware and Westminster Choir College.

THE INHERITANCE OF SONG: RETURNING TO OUR ROOTS” WITH ZULAL ARMENIAN TRIO
Picture
The world‑renowned Armenian women’s trio invites you into the musical tradition they’ve inherited, cherished, and shared across the globe. In this workshop, they’ll explore:  the distinctive time signatures rooted in the regions that shaped this genre; the challenge of bringing modern harmonic sensibilities to an ancient art form; and the craft of arranging together as an ensemble for more than two decades.

Join Zulal for a hands‑on journey into world music: richly layered harmonies sung not just “with feeling,” but with vivid imagery and intentional storytelling. You’ll grow comfortable—truly comfortable—with the unique meters common in Armenian folk music (such as 5/8 and 9/8), internalize melodies, and experiment with rhythmic techniques that make odd meters feel natural and inviting. Come ready to sing, move, and walk away with something genuinely new in your musical toolkit.

Food, drink and song! A meet and greet for adult SingStrong groups, singers and attendees!

After concerts we all like to grab some food and drink. Many of us will head HERE.

This is an awesome party, but it isn’t for everyone. This event is not supervised by SingStrong Inc, Adelphi University, or any other person or entity. This is not an official SingStrong event. No credit is offered at the HS or college for attendance. No fee is charged for attendance. This is simply the spot where some performers and adult summit attendees will be relaxing after the show. It is not for HS students to attend.
